This is the dentists' surgery. There are two dentists who have completed a degree in dentistry followed by post-graduate training, entitling them to register with the General Dental Council. The dentists are assisted by a dental hygienist who carries out procedures such as scaling and polishing teeth. The hygienist has achieved the General Dental Council's Diploma in Dental Hygiene, which is a two year course. The practice employs four dental nurses, who support the dentist in all aspects of patient care, for example getting the appropriate instruments ready, mixing materials and ensuring patient comfort. They also take notes from the dentist's dictation for the patient's records during examinations. The dental nurses are responsible for keeping the surgery clean and hygienic and sterilising the instruments. The dental nurses undertake on-the-job training to achieve a National Certificate. Experience as a Dental Nurse is usually a requirement for those wishing to become a Dental Hygienist.
